چکیده

An inherited abnormality (Figs. 1-9), consisting of irregular growths of various sizes in the head region of the tuk strain of Drosophila, is under investigation. The strain was obtained from Dr. Wilson Stone and appeared in 1945 in a culture of flies obtained at Acahuizotla, Mexico, in 1941 by a collecting party from the University of Texas. Two interacting genes, tu-1 in the first chromosome and tu-3 in the third chromosome, are responsible for the trait (8). Since tu-1 or its alÃ-eleshas been found in several natural populations, it is possible that this gene was already present in the Mexico collection and that only tu-3 arose by mutation. The descriptive term "tumorous head,"1 sym bolized tuh, has been used to identify the trait and the flies which carry the genes. The description of the abnormality (4, 8,13), genetic mechanism (8), influence of temperature on expression (9), and relative viability (5) of tumorous head flies have been presented. A maternal effect controlled by tu-1 was interpreted from the results of reciprocal outcrosses (8). Both wild and mutant stocks from the labora tory were tested for alÃ-elesand modifiers of susceptibility genes. Three of 21 wild stocks (6) carried alÃ-eles of tu-1. Modifiers increasing the per-

Modifiers of Tumorous Head Genes in Natural Populations and Laboratory Stocks of Drosophila Melanogaster.

HE tumorous head (tu-h) abnormality and genetic mechanism were disTcussed by GARDNER (1948), GARDNER and WOOLF (1949) and NEWBY ( 1949). Penetrance, expressivity and relative viability were investigated by GARDNER and RATTY (1952). The influence of high and low temperatures on the expression was described by GARDNER and WOOLF (1950). Modifiers and alleles of tumorous head genes were found in la...

Concentration dependent effect of morphine, aspirin, capsaicin and chili pepper hydro alcoholic extract on thermal and chemical pain model in fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster)

Introduction: Pain research using animal models is related to ethical concerns, so invertebrates and insects have been recommended by researchers. In the present study, the nociceptive and antinociceptive effects of capsaicin, aspirin, morphine and chili extract were examined using fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) as an alternative for rodent pain model. Methods: Stage 3 of larvae and ad...

Viability of homokaryotypes in the tumorous-head strain of Drosophila melanogaster.

HE tumorous-head trait in Drosophila melanogaster is caused by a third chromosome gene (tu-?) showing reduced penetrance. The penetrance can be increased by a sex-linked recessive gene ( tuI ) controlling a maternal effect (GARDNER and WOOLF 1949), by polygenic modifiers (GARDNER, STOTT and DEARDEN 1952), and by high temperature during an early developmental period (GARDNER and WOOLF 1950). Whe...

Toxicological Evaluation of a New Lepidopteran Insecticide, Flubendiamide, in Non-Target Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

Background: Flubendiamide, comparatively a new pesticide designed to eradicate lepidopteran insect pests is known to have low risk to birds, mammals, fish, algae, honey bees, non-target arthropods, earthworms, soil macro- and micro-organisms, non-target plants as well as sewage treatment organisms; however, the risk assessment for aquatic invertebrates from metabolite could not be finalized wit...

Fecundity and fertility in female homo- and heterokaryotypes of the tumorous-head strain of Drosophila melanogaster.

HE tumorous-head (tu-h) strain of Drosophila melanogaster has been the T subject of extensive investigations (for a review of the literature see CrARDNER 1959; WOOLF, KNOWLES and JARVIS 1964). The expression of the trait depends on a semi-dominant gene at position 56 on the third chromosome and a sex-linked recessive gene controlling a maternal effect. Modifiers affecting penetrance have been d...
